The Nespresso Lattissima is THE Nespresso machine for anyone who enjoys a good latte. Since this type of coffee needs milk, you will find that the Lattissima is specifically designed to store and steam milk for your milk-based coffee recipes.
But since there are different Lattissima versions from Nespresso, it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you. If this is the case, why not get some inspiration by looking at our Nespresso Lattissima review, which includes a full overview of the three Lattissima models.
DeLonghi Nespresso Lattissima Review
Overall, you can divide the Nespresso Lattissima into three versions. First, there is the base version in the form of the Nespresso Lattissima One.
Then, you have the two versions that follow that in the form of the Nespresso Lattissima Pro and the Nespresso Lattissima Touch. We take a look at all three to find out which is superior.
Lattissima One vs Lattissima Pro vs Lattissima Touch
When you put these three Delonghi Nespresso machines next to one another, you will notice that there are quite a few differences in terms of design.
Evidently, this means that there are differences when it comes to performance, brewing quality and other variables. So, let’s discuss each in a bit more detail.
The Nespresso Lattissima Pro seems to score best when it comes to performance. It is an espresso machine that comes from the OriginalLine at Nespresso, which means this Nespresso machine is compatible with all those kinds of Nespresso capsules.
But let’s look at the technical aspect of things. The Delonghi Nespresso Pro comes with a whopping seven presets, which is one more than the Delonghi Nespresso Touch.
With the presets, you can easily get espresso, lungo, cappuccino, latte, latte macchiato, warm milk, and hot water at the touch of a button.
Another massive difference between the Nespresso Lattissima Pro and the DeLonghi Nespresso One and Touch is the LCD display. While not everyone needs this advanced feature, it does make programming your espresso machine a whole lot easier.
Finally, the performance also benefit from a light indicator, telling you if your water reservoir is empty or if the capsule drawer on the machine needs emptying.
Of course, this does not mean that the Nespresso Lattissima One and Touch do not perform well. Quite the opposite actually, because these options from the Nespresso Delonghi range are worth the investment too.
Performance is different for everyone. For example, the Pro might be too much for someone who only drinks a single latte in the morning.
The Nespresso Lattissima One is made to provide a single serve. In spite of that, it still contains a milk frother and hot milk features, creating your perfect latte, just in a smaller volume and without an LCD screen.
All three Nespresso Lattissima models score excellent when it comes to brewing quality. Each model comes with its own milk tank, albeit a different capacity milk tank depending on the model you have.
The overall principle of brewing remains the same across all three Nespresso Lattissima models though, this ranges from how to use the milk frother to its compatibility with certain coffee pods.
There is a small difference in brewing quality you should be aware of though, more specifically the milk frothing function for hot milk. The Nespresso Lattissima One is less advanced in that regard, because only the Touch and Pro espresso machine options come with adjustable milk frothing.
In spite of the lack of a adjustable milk frother, the Lattissima One still has a milk container with accompanying frother. So, you can still froth your milk with this espresso machine, just a little less precise compared to the other Lattissima models.
As we briefly mentioned already, the coffee pods used for all three coffee machines are all from the original line. So, if you have a preference for the original line, there is no need to choose one over the other, as they all take the same pods.
On the flipside, it also means that the Nespresso Delonghi Machine does not have Vertuo compatibility. The Vertuo range is designed with a barcode, which is read by the coffee machine.
Then, the espresso machine or coffee machine automatically chooses the settings for your chosen beverage. Of course, you can still create the perfect cup of coffee with machines from the original range, you just need to use its features to their max potential.
Since the principle of all three Lattissima machines are the same, it is no surprise that you will spot some similarities in the design of the three espresso machine options. However, there are more certainly differences too.
The Lattissima One contains the smallest milk container, as this is a single serve espresso machine. On the bright side, the Lattissima One does have the most simple and streamlined design. Obviously, this benefits maintenance when it comes to the exterior of the coffee maker.
So, the Lattissima Pro and Touch undoubtedly have the larger milk container in front of the machine. But on the downside, they are less streamlined.
The Lattissima One may have the smaller milk container, there are fewer nooks and crannies for dirt and grime pileup. When looking at the overall design, we would state that the Lattissima Touch would be the hardest to clean.
When looking at the three lattissima coffee makers, we had to incorporate several factors while evaluating their durability for this review. Firstly, there are the materials that are used for the coffee maker. Secondly, there is the overall construction and the presence of smaller parts that could easily break.
We are happy to say that each of the models met our standards regarding durability. There is only a minimal of small parts and the overall design and construction actually promotes a lengthy lifespan.
If we would have to really choose one machine out of the three in terms of durability, it would have to be the Pro coffee machine. Contrary to its rivals, it contains more stainless steel. So, while the designs are pretty similar and the construction robust for all three coffee makers, the Pro does come out as the winner because of the more durable materials.
Going in for the nitty gritty, it is time to look at maintenance. A good coffee machine is one thing, but it means little if it is accompanied by difficult maintenance. Easy maintenance helps you to keep your machine maintenance long term and could increase its lifespan.
After evaluating all three options, the coffee maker that is the hardest to maintain is undoubtedly the pro. The parts are relatively close together on the outside, making it harder to clean the outside of the machine.
When it comes to maintaining the interior of the machine, all three are relatively straightforward. There’s a maintenance mode, enabling you to clean the machine with some hot water from time to time.
However, we do recommend using a descaling solution every now and again. Some consumers use vinegar, but it is worth mentioning that the manufacturer advises against vinegar for each machine in their range.
Points for improvement
So, what needs to improve? Instead of discussing the machines as a whole, we will mention some points of improvement for each machine. Obviously, since the One is the original version and the Pro and Touch the ones that come after it, you may find that those improvements were made.
One of our gripes with the One was the lack of adjustable milk frother, a point the manufacturer has taken on board and made a feature of the upgraded version. Aside from that, this is one of their most solid machines, especially for single serve.
The machine is easy to use, comes with quick heat up time, a decent water tank, and a draw to store capsules. The maintenance is pretty easy on this one too, so other than an adjustable milk frother, this was the perfect single serve for us.
The Touch improved the milk frother, and that was much appreciated. However, this machine does pose some problems. Our main concern with this version is the maintenance of the exterior.
It seems that when this machine was designed, they decided to lump everything together to keep it as compact as possible. And while this is not necessarily an issue for a coffee maker, it does make maintenance a whole lot trickier.
So, for the touch, we would like to see a bit more space between the components, which in turn gives you more wiggle room when it comes to brewing.
In addition to the difficult maintenance, we are not particularly fond of the design of this machine either. The entire coffee maker appears a little blocky and the overuse of plastic makes it look cheaper than it actually is.
The pro does offer more space between components and comes with the adjustable frother. In addition to that, the overall construction is made from sturdier materials, which makes it look as valuable and durable as can be.
While maintenance is not as easy as with the single serve, it is certainly better than with the Touch coffee maker. If we would have to pick a single point that could be better, it would have to be the milk container.
Somehow, the milk container looks incredibly cheap and does not blend well with the rest of the coffee appliance, which is a real shame.
The nozzle of the want could also be a little more versatile. The thick nozzle only provides such much in terms of adaptability, so the creators of the coffee Pro could have taken it just a little further to make this coffee appliance absolutely perfect.
Verdict: should you buy a Nespresso Lattissima?
Most certainly, but the real question is which one. Firstly, we are ruling out the Touch. While it did improve with the adjustable wand, the clunky design and the difficult maintenance takes it out of the running for us. That leaves us with the Pro and the One. So, which one should you get?
Well, we believe each machine has its purpose for specific consumers. The One is a great single serve and ideal for people who live alone or students who appreciate a decent latte or other milk-based coffee drink.
It is also the most affordable option in the range, which means it could be an appreciated gift for someone as well. Since the One can make several cups of coffee because of the quick way to get hot water, it can be suitable for larger households as well.
The Pro on the other hand is perfect for the coffee aficionado who does not mind spending a little more for convenience.
While the maintenance is a little more difficult than the One, and even though it does come with more of a learning curve, the improvements made to this model are more than worth the investment in our book.
Since the Pro is a little bigger than the One, be sure to take this into account when you are short of space in your kitchen or at the office. Of course, the model is still more compact than machines from other brands.
Of course, for those who own a Touch, it does not mean you have to get rid of your Touch today. We compared the three available models and really picked each one apart to find the superior one.
So, it does not mean the Touch is a machine you should not acquire, it solely means that the One and the Pro could be more suitable for certain consumers. If you are in the market for a Lattissima though, the One and the Pro will be your recommended options.
