Nespresso machines are very popular in the consumer coffee industry. Based in Switzerland, Nespresso makes single-serve espresso machines that brew shots of espresso from special coffee capsules.

Since Nespresso pods are proprietary, there are actually a select few retailers that carry the pods. You may not be able to always find them in your local supermarket.

The best place to buy Nespresso pods is online through Nespresso themselves, Amazon, or other retailers which we’ll detail below.

Nespresso OriginalLine vs VertuoLine

Nespresso machines, and by extension, capsules, come it two varieties:

VertuoLine and OriginalLine.

OriginalLine was the original Nespresso machine that used the small pods and brewed espressos and lungos.

VertuoLine are newer machines made for the North American market that use larger dome-shaped pods and can brew a much wider variety of drinks from espresso shots to 17 ounce Gran Lungos.

VertuoLine machines also use a proprietary barcode scanning system on the pod to determine what drink to brew and they use a centrifuge to extract the coffee instead of using pressure.

How much caffeine in Nespresso pods?

According to Caffeine Informer, Nespresso pods have about 60 mg of caffeine in them. That’s much less than an average cup of coffee, but it’s about the same as an espresso shot.

If you’re looking for a large volume of coffee with less caffeine, Nespresso VertuoLine may be a good option to consider.

Cost of Nespresso pods

Nespresso’s biggest downside is the cost. Each Nespresso pod works out to an average of $0.70 to $0.90 per cup of coffee.

That’s less expensive than a cup of coffee at a local coffee shop and indeed a Starbucks, but it’s still a lot more than if you were to brew the coffee yourself from coffee beans or grounds.

Still, Nespresso coffee does have the convenience factor of being single serve, so if you don’t mind the extra cost for the extreme conveinece of a cup of espresso at the touch of a button, the Nespresso machine is for you.

Where to buy Nespresso pods

It’s worth noting that you won’t find much of a price difference from store to store as the prices for pods are quite standardized.

Nespresso pods are available at Nespresso.com, Nespresso Boutiques, and other online retailers.

If you’d like to save some money, you can consider compatible capsules or refillable capsules.

Nespresso Club and Boutique

The first place to get Nespresso machines and pods is the Nespresso.com online store! They have multiple fullfilment centers all over the world, so depending on where you visit the site from, you may get served a local site you can buy from in your home currency.

Nespresso also has a program called EasyOrder where you can set up a subscription to your favorite pods. There’s no discount, unfortunately, but you may qualify for free shipping under certain conditions.

The main benefit is that this is Nespresso’s own subscription service called Nespresso Club. It’s free to join and free to cancel, too. If you’re worried about ever running out of pods, this is an option worth exploring.

One more benefit to ordering from Nespresso themselves is that most of the flavors will always be in stock, compared to other retailers where you may or may not able to find your favorite variety.

Additionally, if you happen to live near a Nespresso Boutique, the experience of going into the Nespresso Boutique and taking in the atmosphere is always fun.

Many Nespresso Boutiques will gladly offer you a sample if you ask them, and this makes it a good way to try the pods before buying them.

They’re also a way to hook you onto Nespresso coffee in the first place!

Recycle pods with Nespresso

Nespresso pods do have a negative impact on the environment. Nespresso has quite a robust recycling program that lets you return spent coffee pods to Nespresso.

You can drop them off at Nespresso boutiques, ship them back to Nespresso, or send them to their partner retailers.

Amazon

Amazon is the next place you can buy Nespresso pods from. They have a wide variety of third party retailers that carry the pods, and you’ll have quite a large buying choice.

You can find sampler packs, packs of 10, packs of 50, and a wide variety of blends and roasts.

I bet you weren’t expecting this one, were you? Interestingly enough, Bed Bath & Beyond is one of Nespresso’s partner retailers and they happen to be a great place to buy Nespresso pods from.

Bed Bath & Beyond has an online and physical presence, but you’re better off ordering online as there’s no guarantee whether physical stores will have the Nespresso capsules you’re looing for in stock.

Walmart

Walmart’s online store also has a pretty impressive collection of Nespresso capsules. On the Walmart website, you’ll find Nespresso Original, Vertuo, and compatible capsules in packs of 10, 20, 50, and sampler packs.

It’s worth checking out, but the collection is all over the place.

The collection on Bed Bath and Beyond is much more organized and easier to sift through to find a good flavor.

Still, many customers are loyal to the Walmart brand, so whatever floats your boat!

Save money on Nespresso pods with Nespresso alternatives

Gourmesso

Gourmesso is one of the leading companies that makes third party Nespresso compatible capsules, and they’re one of our favorite alternatives for OriginalLine machines.

There’s a lot to like about Gourmesso: the capsules are plastic-free and compostable, and the lids are aluminum and recyclable.

They have a very wide range of flavors, blends, and roasts available so there is something for everyone.

But the best part has to be that Gourmesso capsules are much cheaper than original Nespresso Capsules.

On average, a Gourmesso capsule costs between $0.50 to $0.60 per capsule. That’s much cheaper than Nespresso capsules, which would set you back around $0.70 to $0.80 per capsule. Ten cents may not seem like much, but it adds up over time!

Plus the wide range of varietals, origins, and blends make it a very compelling alternative to try with lots of flavors to explore.

Bestpresso

An even more economical option is Bestpresso. Bestpresso makes both Nespresso pods and Keurig pods, but they are best known as a good-tasting and very inexpensive alternative to Nespresso OriginalLine pods.

They have a decent variety of coffees, though not as many as Gourmesso.

Still, the coffee tastes great and they’re by far the most economical option if you buy in bulk.

20 pods will cost you $0.50 per pod, which is right up there with Gourmesso.

40 coffee capsules will cost you $0.42 per pod, which is significantly less.

120 pods will cost you $0.33 per pod, which is very good, and almost the same as a cup of regular coffee!

HiLine Coffee

Another great place to place your orders for third party Nespresso-compatible pods is HiLine coffee. HiLine coffee makes their own blends and roasts of pods that work with OriginalLine machines.

Their packs are usually of 20 pods each and cost between $14 to $16, which works out to $0.80 on the high end to $0.70 on the low end.

As you can see, these pods cost pretty much the same as Nespresso pods, so the main reason you may wish to opt for these is if you like a particular roast or blend that HiLine carries and that Nespresso does not have.

Peet’s Coffee

Last but not least, you can find a good Nespresso cap at Peet’s Coffee. Peet’s is an iconic US roaster and they have recently jumped on to the third party capsule market.

Peets’ pods are not cheap, but they’re right there between Gourmesso and Nespresso. The cost will be lower if you buy in bulk, and they also carry samplers that customers can order before committing to a particular pod.

They have a decent variety of coffees available as well as a recycling program where you can mail them your used pods in a pre-paid, stamped bag.

As you can see, you have quite a large range of options to buy Nespresso pods from, both original and third party. Even then, it still may end up being quite expensive!

There are a few solutions for that, too.

Saving money with refillable Nespresso pods

So if you want to save some money, there are two options for you:

• Reuse the capsule and replace the seal
• Buy a refillable capsule kit

Reusing capsules

Reusing the capsule is an incredibly Macgyver approach, but it works. You can even do it at home without any additional materials aside from aluminum foil.

Just use a knife to cut away the foil cap of the used pods, dump the grounds, rinse, and add fresh grounds. Cover the capsule with foil(try to match the edges as much as possible), place it back in the machine and give it a go.

This is incredibly sketchy, but it works, and you can get maybe one or two extra uses out of a capsule.

Foil lids for Nespresso capsules

Some companies make special reusable seals for Nespresso capsules, too. Some even have a food grade adhesive that sticks the seal onto the capsule, returning it to it’s almost original condition.

There is just one issue here: since you’re using an existing Nespresso pod, you have to have bought capsules for this to work! And since you can only reuse a capsule a handful of times, you’re essentially extending the life of 10 capsules to 30 shots.

This does not turn out to be quite cost effective because you also have to add in the cost of the coffee you fill with.

A better option would be to get a refillable Nespresso pod.

Refillable pods

Refillable coffee pods are a good alternative that will definitely save you money in the long run. Of course, you’ll have to buy your own fresh coffee, but you can easily pick up 10-12 ounces of coffee beans for the cost of 20 ready pods.

There many available kits (see the best nespresso refillable capsules here), and they usually come with a scoop and a supply of seals that you will need.

The scoop is a good addition as Nespresso capsules require much less coffee than a typical espresso shot.

Note: both options listed above are for OriginalLine. There is only one VertuoLine reusable capsule currently available.

There are plenty of places to buy Nespresso coffee pods from. As we mentioned earlier, ordering online is the best way to go as they’ll reach you no matter where you are.

If you’re living in a smaller town, your local big box store may not carry them, and even if they do, they may not have the variety you’re looking for.
